The Finishing Touch – What’s In for 2025?

If home design is the canvas, finishes are the brushstrokes that bring a space to life. As we step into 2025, we’re seeing everything from the revival of brick cladding to the embrace of classical detailing. Let’s dive in and explore the finishes that we’re incorporating into our Su Casa home designs.
/01. Brick Cladding: The Reinvention of a Classic
For years, brick was considered a dated choice—"that reddy-brown belongs on a Rottweiler, not my wall,” we all thought (unless, of course, you live in a loft in SoHo that leans hard into a modern industrial vibe, with dark moody accents…we’ll give that a pass).
But for us non-Soho civilians, brick has been less-than-cool for quite some time; but in 2025…Brick. Is. Back. With, of course, a fresh take. Picture whitewashed brick, painted brick, and overgrouted brick. To this we say, heck yes.

What’s great about this trend is it’s available to all; both the new, custom home client, and the person looking to refresh their 90s bungalow which, no doubt, sports a terracotta fireplace; that bad boy is ripe for a facelift. Take the plunge, we say!
/02. Overgrouted Stone: Embrace the Royal in You
The overgrouted finish is not just for brick, but also for stone. Gorgeous, textured, stone. Rustic, storied, and full of character—overgrouted stonework is being embraced by dozens of our clients, with our whole-hearted support.
By intentionally thickening grout lines, the resulting finish is reminiscent of a medieval castle. Lorde was dead wrong to sing, “We’ll never be royyyyals”, as we say, why ever not? Just embrace the overgrouted stone, and you’re a royal in our books. Apply this finish to a fireplace, an accent wall, patio, or kitchen. We always recommend more than one application of a material in order to tie the theme of materials throughout your home.
One spectacular way to implement this look is to incorporate stone on a wall that appears both on the interior and the exterior of your home; like this one pictured below. We have several clients choosing to incorporate this look in their home designs, as it doesn’t just add depth—it tells a story, making a home feel established and timeless.
/03. The Comeback of Classical Detailing
Minimalism had its moment, but intricate millwork is making a grand return. Inspired by French architecture, we’re seeing the return of elegant crown moldings, cornices, and intricate trim work. Whereas a crown moulding is strictly for interior use, a cornice can be used in both interior and exterior designs, plus it has a functional purpose. Cornices were originally used to keep rainwater away from a building, but today they are loved for their elegance and grandeur.

These three classical elements frame spaces beautifully, adding a level of craftsmanship that elevates a room. This movement towards classical detailing aligns with the renewed love for traditional elements like window shutters, louvers, and coach lanterns, creating a harmonious blend of classic and modern luxury.
Bringing It All Together
The finishes of 2025 are about more than aesthetics—they’re about storytelling. Whether it’s the allure of textured brick, the depth of overgrouted stone, or the elegance of classical trim, these elements create a home that feels rich with history and meaning.
